Abstract
A solar collector is disclosed comprising: a solar absorber (1) for absorbing solar radiation and converting it to heat, a heat storage section (4) with a heat storage medium (17) for storing the heat from the solar absorber (1), a first fluid circuit (6) arranged to transport heat from the solar absorber (1) to the heat storage section (4), and a second fluid circuit (7) arranged to transport heat from the heat storage section (4) as a heat output from the solar collector; wherein the heat storage medium (17) comprises a phase change material, and wherein the absorber (1), heat storage section (4), and first and second fluid circuits (6, 7) are arranged as or within a self- contained unit. A method of using the solar collector is disclosed wherein the second fluid circuit (7) is used to provide, on demand, a fluid heated to a predefined temperature corresponding to a phase change temperature of the phase change material.
