Abstract
To produce cells to be filled with electro-optical material, e.g. liquid crystal, single or multiple arrays of electrode patterns 16a, 17a, 18a and screen- printed patterns 21 of a glass frit spacer mixture are applied to substrate sheet material 5 in patterns separately suitable for front and back substrates of a display cell and the frit is vitrified by firing. Subsequent operation of scribing and breaking (Fig 7a) of substrate sheet material along a lines 15, possibly both vertical and horizontal, through frit and electrode patterns provides individual substrates, with frit 21 and electrodes 18, 18a extending fully to the substrate edge. Subsequently, the front and back substrates are sealed together by remelting the frit. Filling passage 23 may be left after sealing; one substrate may overlap the other for ease of connection. <IMAGE>
