Abstract

Errors in the width of stock rolled in a train of mill stands are detected and the rotational speed or the roll separation of one mill stand adjusted to vary interstand tension in a sense to minimise the detected errors in the stock width. The roll separation or roll rotational speed, respectively, of at least one other mill stand of the train is subsequently adjusted in a sense to minimise the interstand tension caused by the adjustment to the first-mentioned mill stand. The stock has substantially equal width and height dimensions. In the figure, 8 measures the height for control of the gap of stand 2 and the width for speed control via "conditioner" 13, limiter 14 and "set point controller" 15.6 measures interstand tension and also controls speed via 15; it also controls the gap of stand 1. "Back tension" is measured at 21 and controls the speed of both stands. No circuit details are disclosed. <IMAGE>
