Abstract

Grey stock is passed along a passage (12) from a stock inlet (13) to an outlet (14) for cleaned stock. The passage is defined by a filter screen (3), preferably of wire gauze. Within the passage is disposed a stirring member (4). Washing liquid such as water is introduced into the passage (12), preferably by means of apertures (6) in a central portion (5) of the stirring member (4). Effluent liquid passes through the screen (3), for extraction e.g. through outlet (22). To enable the washing of stock of high consistency e.g. up to 7%, whilst avoiding clogging of the screen (3), the arrangement is such that relative rotation of the screen (3) and member (4) results in clusters of stock fibres, which move around the passage (12) as they pass therealong. The stirring member (4) preferably includes a plurality of longitudinally-extending axis-parallel bars (15) radially spaced from the central portion (5). <IMAGE>
