Abstract
Silicon metal is produced in a two step process in which a first step silicon carbide is formed by the reaction of silica and carbon, and in a second step, silicon carbide obtained from the first step is reacted with more silica in a submerged arc electric furnace to form silicon metal, additional carbon materials optionally being added if operating conditions so dictate. The silicon carbide produced in the first step may be recovered and subjected to benefication and re- agglomeration prior to the second step. Alternatively the steps may be carried out continuously in separate zones of a single furnace, suitably by effecting the first step in the interior of a hollow electrode of a submerged arc electric furnace and then passing the silicon carbide so formed into the furnace hearth where the second step occurs.
