Abstract
A closed-circuit liquid cooling system for an internal combustion engine (1) comprises a pump (2), a thermostatic multi-way valve (4) having an inlet port connectable to the engine and three outlet ports, connected respectively to a return duct (5) connected to the suction side of the pump, to a duct (6) leading to a heat exchanger (7) and to one end of a heat-exchanger by-pass (10) the other end of which is connected to another return duct extending from the heat exchanger to the pump. The other return duct may pass through an oil cooler (8) and/or an intercooler (9). The valve (4) has a pivotable valve member (15) arranged to direct the cooling liquid through the one return duct (5) and the by-pass (10), or through the heat exchanger, or through the one return duct and the heat exchanger and the by-pass. The position of the valve member (15) is determined by the temperature of the cooling liquid as sensed by a sensor (12). <IMAGE>
