Abstract
A device responsive to changes of temperature, for clamping a member at a point on its path, which device may be embodied in a rotor balancing equipment consisting of a track 14 which in use is secured to a rotor 12 to be balanced and in which balancing weights 22 can move. The track is made wholly or in part of a heat- recoverable material preformed in cross-sectional shape such that at a normal operating temperature of the shaft the weights are locked in the track (20) but at a significantly different temperature the weights are free to move along the track (20A). The rotor with the track attached is rotated, the weights are released by change of temperature and take up balancing positions, and the temperature is then returned to lock the weights in those positions. A preferred heat-recoverable material is a copper-zinc-aluminium alloy, which may have a transition temperature range -80 DEG C to -40 DEG C. <IMAGE>
