Abstract
A method of polarizing a thermoplastic resin film 1 between a pair of electrodes 2, 2' comprises the steps of placing a layer of a dielectric or semiconductor material 3 whose electrical conductivity is higher than that of the thermoplastic resin film 1 between at least one of the two electrodes 2, 2' and the thermoplastic resin film 1, and applying a high voltage to the electrodes 2, 2'. Layer 3 limits the current flow through a defective area 4 of film 1, so preventing or reducing dielectric breakdown in area 4. The polarized film may be an electret or a piezoelectric or pyroelectric element. <IMAGE>
