Abstract

A synthetic hydrous calcium silicate composition is formed by the hydrothermal reaction of calcium oxide and a siliceous material, has particle sizes of a minimum of 8% &dagger& 325 US mesh, a permeability in the range of about 0.35- 0.70 darcies and an oil soluble calcium content (as defined in the specification) of not greater than 60 ppm. The silicate may be mixed with diatomite and magnesium silicate hydrate. The synthetic hydrous calcium silicates of the present invention are significantly coarser in particle size, have significantly greater flow rates and less oil soluble calcium contents than the synthetic hydrous calcium silicates of the prior art. The composition is useful in a variety of restaurant, industrial and rendering oil filtration applications for reduction of free fatty acid content of oils such as cooking oils.
