Abstract
An electrochemical cell or battery, comprises a stack of plate-shaped elements, including at least two electrode elements, each of which consists of a sheet or plate 2-00, 2-01, 2-02 of electrode material which is mounted in a frame 1-00, 1-01 consisting entirely or partly of a thermoplastic material, in such a way that gas or liquid chambers are formed between the elements, these elements containing orifices which in the completed stack form channels for the supply or removal of liquid or gas, and the thermoplastic material of successive elements being welded together by fusing the thermoplastic material and hardening it again. According to the invention, at least one of the contact faces of successive elements is provided with welding ridges 12, 21 consisting of the thermoplastic material round the edges of the orifices and along the inside and/or outside edge(s) of the element, and the elements are fixed on each other by vibration welding, i.e ultrasonic or friction welding. An ultrasonic welding horn 42 may have grooves 54, 55, 56 to form welding ridges from flat ridges 60, 61, 62 on the uppermost frame 1-00. <IMAGE>
