Abstract
A high velocity forging machine employs a relatively lightweight ram or hammer (10) which is driven by a spring (32) of high spring rate during its working stroke. The hammer velocity will be at least 30 ft/second upon impact and because of the high velocities employed the machine can deliver as much energy as a conventional drop forging machine employing a heavier hammer. The hammer (10) may be raised manually or by means of a suitable clutch- controlled drive arrangement; in both cases, the hammer is arranged to be released instantaneously so that the spring energy acts solely on the hammer. <IMAGE>
