Abstract

Linear movement of a piston 13 in a cylinder 12 is reversed by a mechanism which connects the working chamber 17 thereof alternately to a fluid inlet 19 and a fluid outlet 21, the mechanism comprising mechanically linked inlet and outlet valves 26, 27; 28 actuated by movement of the piston, the inlet valve including a valve element 27 arranged to be held in a valve closed position by fluid pressure in the inlet 19 greater than that in the chamber 17, the outlet valve including a valve element 30 arranged to be held in a valve closed position by fluid pressure in the chamber 17 greater than that in the outlet 21. A valve actuation member 34 coupled to a lever 31 linking the valves is shifted by the piston, when the chamber volume is at a maximum, to move the inlet and outlet valve elements to closed and open positions respectively and substantially simultaneously. The stroke length may be adjustable. <IMAGE>
