Abstract

A collet chuck is formed with a collet chuck or nose part 21 releasably coupled to a collet tube part 22 which is threaded. The collet chuck part provides a ring of jaws having their flank surfaces joined to one another by resilient means e.g. a layer of elastomeric material. A compression force applied to an external frusto- conical surface 25 of the chuck part causes the jaws to be compressed independently inwards so that they can grip a workpiece located between them. The coupling device 23 provides abutting torque-transmitting surfaces on interdigitating axial projections on the two parts, the projections defining also a channel in which a retaining or coupling ring 43 is accommodated to prevent separation of the two parts when in use. Disconnection of the coupling is achieved either by removing the ring or by increasing the angle of the jaws to the chuck part axis which causes the chuck part projections to disengage from behind the coupling ring. A change-over device which can be applied to the chuck part when it is to be replaced, is operable to vary the jaws angles simultaneously. The design of the collet chuck in two disconnectable parts reduces the overall cost and size of a set of collet chuck on a lathe as the tube part does not have to be removed with the chuck part. <IMAGE>
