Abstract

A sterilizable evaporative humidifier for respiratory usage has a disposable absorbent evaporative element 35 which when dry loosely fits within heater tube 31 and which when it takes up humidifying liquid from reservoir 24 swells into thermal contact with tube 31 which is surrounded by a heater element 32. Gas tube 19, inlet connector 16 and the space between tube 19 and element 35 are of comparable area to minimise pressure drop in the apparatus. <IMAGE>
