Abstract

Fluid pressure feed apparatus for an automatic lathe comprises a drum (1) containing guide tubes (e.g. 5A) of different diameters packed in sound-absorbing material. The axes of all the guide tubes are situated on a single circumference centred about the axis of the drum so that simple indexing rotation of the drum brings the tubes selectively into alignment with the axis of the headstock of the automatic lathe to be fed with bar stock. A controllable source of pressure fluid is operable to displace a feed piston (21), stock pusher (22) and hence the bar stock (29): the oil entering an annular space (28) between the bar (29) and tube (5A) to provide a hydrodynamic bearing for the bar. An increased speed of change-over from one bar stock to another of different diameter is achieved, as also is quieter operation. <IMAGE>
