Abstract

A piston seal comprising an annular body portion (11), a skirt portion (12) extending axially from said body and having a substantially cylindrical external surface (16) for co- operation with the inner wall 17 of a cylinder 18, and a sealing flange portion (13) having an external sealing lip (22) extending from said body and biassed outwardly beyond the cylindrical surface (16) before mounting in the cylinder. The biassing is provided by a load unit 25 of plastics material or metal, the unit acting as a finger type spring. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and Relating to Piston Seals This invention relates to a piston seal for use in such piston and cylinder devices as shock absorbers, hydraulic rams and suspension units.
A common sealing arrangement in such devices is made up of a rubber sealing ring with the piston acting as the bearing within the cylinder, while another arrangement uses a rubber sealing ring with a ring of plastics material let into the piston circumference to act as a bearing. Also some arramgements have a rubber ring with a further plastics ring set on the heel diameter both to act as a bearing ring and to prevent extrusion of the rubber under pressure.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple sealing/bearing arrangement for pistons.
The present invention is a piston seal comprising an annular body portion, a skirt portion extending axially from said body and having a substantially cylindrical external surface, and a sealing flange portion having an external sealing lip extending from the said body and biassed outwardly beyond the cylindrical surface.
The present invention is further a piston seal as defined in the last preceding paragraph in combination with a piston head.
The present invention is moreover a piston and cylinder device in which the piston head has mounted thereon a seal as defined in the second last preceding paragraph.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure is a partial cross-section through a seal according to the present invention in position on a piston head in the cylinder.
Referring now to the drawing, a seal 10 is annular and has a body portion 11, an annular skirt portion 12 and a sealing flange portion 13.
The body portion 11 seats in an annular step 1 4 in the piston head, and the skirt portion extends axially from the outer periphery of the body portion and sits on an external flange 1 5 on the piston head. The outer peripheral surface 1 6 of the skirt portion -12 forms a bearing surface in engagement with the interior wall 17 of a cylinder 1 8.
Peripheral grooves 20 are provided in the bearing surface to retain oil and distribute it over the cylinder wall 17.
The sealing flange portion 1 3 extends from the body portion and is provided with a sealing lip 22 in engagement with the cylinder wall 1 7. The sealing lip portion is biassed outwardly beyond the bearing surface 1 6 (the drawing shows its position before location in the cylinder) and this achieved, in this embodiment by means of a load unit 25 acting as a finger type spring. A piston cap 26 clamps the unit 25 onto the body portion 11 and step 14.
It should be noted that a peripheral well 30 is formed at the base of the sealing lip portion adjacent the bearing portion, this well assisting lubrication by acting as a reservoir.
it is preferred that the seal 10 be made of PTFE to give minimal friction characteristics, but it could be made of any of the well known rubber or elastomeric materials suitable for this purpose.
The load unit 25 may be made of plastics material or metal.
The load unit 25 may be dispensed with under certain conditions and the inition lip load obtained from sealing flange portion 13'.
