Description
SPECIFICATION
Placing an elongate body having an elongate hole around an elongate core
The present invention relates to placing an elongate body having an elongate hole around an elongate core.
When placing an elongate body having an elongate hole, where the body is made of elastic rubber, around an elongate core with larger diameter than that of the hole in the body, for example a termination item of the kind which is described in Swedish Patent No.
761145-3 over the solid insulation of a cable, it is common to put an anti-friction agent on the elongate core. In those cases where the diameter of the core is considerably larger than the diameter of the hole it can be, despite the anti-friction agent, difficult and hard to slide the elongate body on to the core as the anti-friction agent is pushed ahead of the body so that it does not stay in the space between the core and the wall of the hole and thus facilitate the sliding on.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of placing by pushing an elongate elastic body having an elongate hole around an elongate core with a diameter greater than the diameter of the hole, in which method: a thin, stiff sleeve is placed around the core, the sleeve having an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the core and having a length smaller than the length of the body; a truncated cone is placed against an end of the core and against an end of the sleeve, the truncated cone having a major diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of the sleeve and having a minor diameter smaller than the diameter of the hole in the body; anti-friction agent is put on the envelope surface of the cone; the body is pushed on to the cone and on to the sleeve and further over the core to the intended length over the core, resulting in the sleeve being stuck in the front end of the hole in the body; and the sleeve is removed from the hole in the body.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided means adapted for performing a method according to the preceding paragraph in order to place by pushing an elongate elastic body having an elongate hole around an elongate core with a diameter greater than the diameter of the hole, the means comprising a thin, stiff sleeve and a truncated cone having a major diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of the sleeve.
The present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a part-sectional view of an elongate body; and
Figure 2 shows an elongate core with means on it to assist in pushing the body on to the core.
The elongate body which is to be placed can, for example, be a termination item intended for cables of the kind described in the patent mentioned in the introduction. Referring to Fig. 1, a termination item 1 is made with a long and narrow body of creeping current-proof, elastic synthetic rubber of
EPDM (ethylene/propylene/diene-rubber)type. Along the whole length of the body there is a cylindrical hole. The core on to which the elongate body, here the termination item, is to be placed is in this case the insulation 2 of a cable. A piece of the cable is peeled so that its conductor 3 is exposed and the solid insulation 2 of the cable is freed from protecting covers which are placed on the cable when manufacturing it.
The hole through the termination item 1 has a diameter which is smaller than the external diameter of the cable insulation 2 so that if the item is placed on the insulation of the cable, the termination item of rubber firmly grips around the insulation of the cable.
In one embodiment, the hole of the item 1 has a diameter of 41.5 mm and a length of 11 8 mm. It is intended to be placed on a cable the insulation of which has an external diameter of 42.5 mm at the least and of 47 mm at the most.
In order to render pushing of the termination item 1 on to the cable easier, an antifriction agent, for example vaseline, is placed on the insulation of the cable.
When the hole of the termination item is considerably smaller than the external diameter of the cable insulation, the pushing needs to be further facilitated. To this end a thin, stiff, cylindrical sleeve 4 is placed around the insulation of the cable, which sleeve has an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the cable insulation. The length of the sleeve is considerably smaller than the length of the termination item. A sleeve which is intended for cable with the above-mentioned size has an internal diameter of 48 mm, a material thickness of about 1 mm and a length of 30 mm.
Furthermore, against the cut end of the cable insulation there is placed a truncated cone 5 having a major diameter equal to the external diameter of the sleeve and a minor diameter smaller than the diameter of the hole of the termination item. The length of the cone is approximately the same as the radius of the sleeve. Axially through the cone a hole extends with approximately the same diameter as the minor diameter of the cone. Around the base of the cone there is a step having a somewhat smaller diameter than the base diameter of the cone, resulting in that the sleeve 4 can be slid on to the cone 5 a short way.
The method of pushing the termination item
1 on to the cable insulation 2 is as follows.
Anti-friction agent is placed on that part of the insulation 2 of the cable as is to be covered by the termination item 1.
The sleeve 4 is slid over the insulation of the cable.
The cone 5 is slid towards the cut end of the insulation of the cable and with the base of the cone towards the insulation.
The sleeve 4 is slid on to the base of the cone 5.
Anti-friction agent is placed on the outside
of the cone 5.
The termination item 1 is pushed on to the
cone 5 and the sleeve 4 and further over the cable insulation, so that the hole of the termi
nation item is completely filled with cable
insulation, the -sleeve being stuck in the front end of the hole in the termination item 1.
During pushing, the sleeve 4, will keep the front end of the termination item 1 widened so that anti-friction agent put on the insulation will remain under the sleeve and in the hole of the item and thus render the sliding on considerably easier than when the sleeve and the cone are not used and the termination item 1, during pushing, pushes the anti-friction agent ahead of it.
When the termination item 1 has been pushed into its correct position, the cone 5 can be removed.
The sleeve 4 has a straight slit along one of the generating lines of the cylinder, and is removed by pulling it out from the termination item with a pair of pliers in the direction of pushing, opening it and removing it. The sleeve can then be re-used when pushing no other termination items.
In an alternative embodiment the sleeve 4 does not have a slit, and in it is provided a cutting member, for example a cutting string thread through it. Such a sleeve is removed by pulling out the sleeve from the termination with a pair of pliers in the direction of pushing, cutting by means of the cutting member a slit along one of the generating lines of the cylinder, opening the sleeve and removing it.
A sleeve cut like this cannot be re-used but has to -be discarded.
Methods and means according to the present invention can be used when pushing on other elastic bodies than the above-described termination item for cable insulation.
