Abstract
A gas ridge vent terminal comprising a ridge tile 2 and a pipe section 4 projecting from the upper and lower surfaces of said ridge tile. The pipe section, in the form of a tubular member, will either be integral with the ridge tile or formed as a separate member for location in a bore in the ridge tile and secured to said ridge tile. The ridge tile may be crescent-shaped or triangular in cross- section, and the upper extremity of said pipe section may carry a grill head 10. Pipe section 4 receives tube or pipe 6 to connect it to a gas appliance for venting and removal of combustion products. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Roof Ridge Vent
This invention relates to roof ridge vents, that is to vents which are positioned in the ridges of roofs for ventilation purposes and for carrying off the products of combustion for gas burning appliances.
The conventional gas ridge vent terminal consists of a suitably shaped, usually curved or generally triangular in cross-section, member having elongate, longitudinally extending slots at either side, such ridge vent terminal being placed in appropriate position in the line of ridge tiles at the ridge of the roof. In many cases the conventional gas ridge vent terminal functions satisfactory, but in certain instances the resistance factor is just too great. Perhaps due to site conditions, prevailing winds travelling up the slope of a roof and restricting burned products from clearing or perhaps a high pressure zone at or below the ridge line can lead to spillage of burned products in a room in which the appliance is installed.
The present invention seeks to obviate the disadvantages of conventional gas ridge vent terminals by providing an improved, more efficient terminal.
According to the present invention, there is provided a gas ridge vent terminal comprising a ridge tile having a pipe section formed integrally therewith or secured thereto, said pipe section projecting from the upper and lower surfaces of the tile and being adapted to receive at said lower surface of said tile or tube, pipe or the like so as to connect said ridge tile to a gas appliance for the purpose of venting said gas appliance and for carrying off the products of combustion from said appliance.
The ridge tile will preferably be composed of conventional materials and of conventional size, and will preferably be generally crescent shaped.
Alternatively the ridge tile may be generally triangular in cross-section or any other suitable shape.
The pipe section will preferably be formed integrally with the ridge tile, and will consist of a tubular shaped member projecting from the upper
and lower curved surfaces of the ridge tile.
Alternatively, the pipe section may be formed as a
separate item for location in a bore in the ridge tile, the pipe section being suitably secured in
position.
In order that the invention may be more readily
understood, an embodiment thereof will now be
described, by way of example, reference being
made to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a perspective view of a gas
ridge vent terminal according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a gas ridge vent
terminal comprises a generally crescent-shaped
member 2 which is formed of conventional
materials and of conventional size. As will be
seen, the member 2 is elongate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The member 2 has formed integrally therewith a short pipe section 4 which projects from the upper curved surface 2A and lower curved surface 2B of the member 2. The pipe section is positioned such that its axis is substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the member 2, the pipe section having an external diameter of such a size to receive a pipe or tube 6 to connect the ridge tile to a gas appliance (not shown) which is to be vented, and a pipe or tube 8 having a grill head 10 for ensuring that the combustion products passing upwardly through the pipe section from the gas appliance leave the ridge tile well above the ridge tile. The internal diameter of the pipe section will be such as to facilitate the required rate of flow of said combustion products.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the pipe section may be formed as a separate item to be located in a bore of the member 2, said separate pipe section being suitably secured in position by means of an adhesive.
With a gas ridge vent terminal according to the invention, there is no necessity for a ridge tile adaptor to convert an ideal resistance free 5" circular internal diameter flue pipe (the pipe or tube 6) into an approximate 1 2"x2" slot. A gas ridge vent terminal according to the invention can simply and easily replace an existing ridge vent terminal with little or no alteration to flue pipes in the false roof.
A conventional ridge vent terminal has a resistance factor (k) of 1.0, whereas it has been found that the resistance factor (k) of a ridge vent terminal according to the invention is 0.25.
Claims

A gas ridge vent terminal comprising a ridge tile having a pipe section formed integrally therewith or secured thereto, said section projecting from the upper and lower surfaces of said tile and being adapted to receive at said lower surface of said tile a tube, pipe or the like so as to connect said pipe section and said ridge tile to a gas appliance for the purpose of venting said gas appliance and for carrying off the products of combustion from said appliance.
2. A gas ridge vent terminal according to claim 1, wherein said ridge tile is generally crescentshaped or triangular in cross-section.
3. A gas ridge vent terminal according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said pipe section is a tubular member formed of the same material as said ridge tile.
4. A gas ridge vent terminal according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein said pipe section is formed as a separate item and is located in a bore in said ridge tile and secured to said ridge tile.
5. A gas ridge vent terminal according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the upper extremity of said pipe section has a grill head thereon.
6. A gas ridge vent terminal substantially as
herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
