Abstract

A roller and breast mill for solid materials of various kinds comprising a single roller (10) having a fluted peripheral surface which is adjustably spaced from a plate (11) also having a fluted surface, a hopper (15) for feeding material to be ground to the tapering space between the roller and the plate, the individual flutes on the roller being arranged with a slightly helical pitch so that they are angled with respect to the flutes on the plate, whereby material descending between the plate and the roller is broken with a scissor like action, the material then falling on to a screen (16) from which oversized materials may be recycled by a conveyor represented at 17 to the grinding position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Grinding machine This invention concerns a grinding machine for solid materials of various kinds.
According to the present invention, a grinding machine comprising a single roller having a fluted peripheral surface which is adjustably spaced from a plate also having a fluted surface, means for feeding material to be ground to the space between the roller and the plate, and the flutes on the plate being at an angle to the flutes on the roller whereby material passing between the plate and the roller is broken with a scissor-like action.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing which show by way of example only, one form of grinding machine embodying the invention.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 shows a transverse section through the grinding machine; and Figure 2 shows a view of the grinding roller of the machine of Fig. 1 seen in the direction of the arrow A.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the grinding machine essentially comprises a single roller 10 mounted for rotation with its axis extending horizontally and having a fluted peripheral surface.
As best seen from Fig. 2, the individual flutes are arranged with a slight helical pitch for reasons which will be apparent hereinafter.
The roller 10 is adjustable towards and away from an arcuate or flat, generally inclined plate 11 whose surface facing towards the roller 10 is profiled by flutes which may extend in a horizontal direction. The distance between the fluted surfaces of the roller and plate reduces downwards towards a nip. Preferably, although not shown in Fig. 1, the height of the flutes diminishes towards the lower end of the plate to ensure a progressive size reduction as material progresses towards the nip between roller and plate.
The plate 11 and roller 10 are mounted on a common frame 1 3 and hydraulic cylinder means 14 is provided to hold them at the desired spacing but which can allow them to separate if the load between them should exceed a pre-determined limit, as for example if a hard object were accidentally introduced with the feed.
Material to be ground is fed into the space between the plate 11 and roller 10 by means of a hopper 1 5 under flood conditions and the material is broken by the scissor-like action occuring between the horizontal flutes of the plate 11 and the helical flutes of the roller 10.
Material emerging from the nip between the roller 10 and plate 11 falls downwardly to a screen 1 6 and oversized material is recycled by a mechanical conveyor generally indicated at 17 to the hopper 15.
Typically, the roller 10 will have a diameter of 40 cms. and be driven at a speed in the range of from 1 50 to 300 rpm.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
Thus, for example, the plate 11 may be interchangeable with others having flutes of different size or may be made of multiple plates in series with different flute patterns.
1. A grinding machine comprising a single roller having a fluted peripheral surface which is adjustably spaced from a plate also having a fluted surface, means for feeding material to be ground to the space between the roller and the plate, and the flutes on the plate being at an angle to the flutes on the roller whereby material passing between the plate and the roller is broken with a scissor-like action.
2. A grinding machine according to claim 1, wherein the space between the fluted surface of the roller and that of the plate, reduces towards a nip therebetween.
3. A grinding machine according to claim 1, or claim 2, wherein the individual flutes on the roller are arranged with a slight helical pitch.
4. A grinding machine according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein relative movement between the fluted surfaces is permitted in the event of a load passing between them which exceeds a predetermined limit.
5. A grinding machine according to claim 2, wherein the height of the flutes on the plate diminishes towards the nip between the fluted surfaces.
6. A grinding machine according to any one of the preceding claims, including a hopper for feeding material to the fluted surfaces, a screen onto which ground material is deposited, and means to recycle oversized materials from the screen to the hopper.
7. A grinding machine substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
