Abstract

Circular-saw machines. -Boards, tongued and grooved by cutters 2 on a planing - machine 1, Fig. 1, are joined and then cut by saws 26, 42, operating in directions at right - angles into sections of a definite size, suitable, for example, for use in the manufacture of packing- cases. The boards, on leaving the machine 1, are fed forward by rollers 3 at a speed considerably greater than that of the planing- machine feed-mechanism until they reach a stop 24 adjustable on a sliding rod 23 actuating a one-revolution clutch 20 on a shaft carrying a disk provided with a roller engaging pivoted arm which operates, through linkwork, a ruler 7. At each revolution of the clutch shaft, the ruler 7 is reciprocated and moves the boards parallel to themselves through a distance equal to the thickness of a board, so that the edge of the board being fed always engages with the edge of the last board fed. A glueing-device 94, engaging one of the edges of the boards, may be arranged between the cutters 2 and the feed-rollers 3. The boards, during their movement across the table 1, are cut into two or more parts by saws 26 carried by a shaft 25. The boards then engage abutments on a frame 30, 31, 32 reciprocable on rollers 34. The saw 42 is attached to a sleeve slidahly mounted on a rotating shaft 41 carried by a frame 40, which is reciprocated on parallel bars 36 at right-angles to the direction of motion of the boards by a connecting-rod 69, Fig. 8, carried by a chain 67 passing over chain-wheels 66, 68. The chain-wheel 66 is mounted on a shaft 65, which is rotated through toothed gearing by a friction clutch 63 thrown into action by the movement of the frame 30, 31, 32. The frame 40, just before it reaches its end positions, engages collars 48', 48 on the bars 37, and the movement of the collars acts through links 49, connected levers 50, arms 52, and links 53 to raise and lower cross-pieces 38 carrying the bars 37, so as to move the saw into and away from the cutting position. The sleeve carrying the saw is vertically movable in a slide, which is itself slidable horizontally in a frame attached to the frame 30, 31, 32, so that the saw moves with the boards. A spring 78<1>, on the rod 77<1> connecting the lever 50, takes up the shock when the frame is lowered, and later aids in raising it again. During the return movement of the saw, a pin projecting from the frame 40 engages an arm 91 and reciprocates, through an arm 89 and link 88, a rod 85 carried by arms 86 fixed to a rocking shaft 87. The rod 85, through engagement with an arm 84, rocks a shaft 83, Fig. 1, carrying arms which engage beneath the edges of the cut-off sections and lift them clear of the abutments on the frame 30, 31, 32, enabling them to be removed from the machine and allowing the frame 30, 31, 32 to be returned to its original position by a spring or weight. At the end of its return movement, the saw is brought to rest by the pin on the frame 40 striking an arm 76, which throws the clutch 63 out of action.
