Abstract

20,917. Simpson, W. S. Sept. 21. Cementation.-Iron or steel surfaces are hardened, toughened, or otherwise modified by fusing the surface electrically in a vacuum and introducing metals or metallic or carbon compounds into the molten surface. Ferro-carbon, ferro-manganese, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, or vanadium may be introduced in this way, and, by a series of operations a plate or other article may be made to consist of several layers of metal of different properties. The apparatus comprises a carriage 7 adapted to be traversed in two directions at right-angles under a number of independent adjustable electrodes 31 depending from a cover 23. The carriage 7 supports the article 8 to be treated, which is suitably packed to prevent loss of molten metal over the edges. Means are provided for raising and lowering the cover 23 and for exhausting the chamber, and for cleaning sight-holes 27. The under surface of the article may be cooled by water, and the cover 23 may also be sprayed with water. A fusible slag covering for the article is provided.
