Abstract
19,162. Gruss, L. R. Aug. 15. Composite and pneumatic springs. - Consists in fitting a telescopic pneumatic wheel - spoke with a double differential piston operating in the tubular rim and hub members of the spoke. The rim member 14 is formed with a chamber 13 closed by a gland 15. The hub member 8 is fitted with a cylindrical chamber 18 closed by a gland 19. The small piston normally beds against the bottom of the chamber 13, and the large piston against the gland 19. The pistons, gland 19, and chamber 13 are fitted respectively with valves 27, 22, 26, 21, which operate so that an air cushion is maintained in the chambers. The valve 26 communicates with the atmosphere at 25 through a spiral groove 24 in the wall of the cylinder 18. The rod 11 connecting the pistons is fitted with a collar, between which and the gland 19 a spring is placed to cause a quick return of the pistons. For heavy vehicles, the collar may be fitted with a one-way valve 20<a>, which causes reduction of air pressure above the collar and provides additional resistance to inward motion of the pistons.
