Abstract
3517. Lake, H. W., [Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co.l. Feb. 12. Automatic circuit-breakers ; interlocked switches.- In multip!e switch devices, particular'y adapted for starting electric motors, a number of switches tending to stand in the open position are arranged to be closed in a definite sequence ; each switch, when closed, being adapted to hold a preceding switch closed, and a magnet being provided to hold the last switch closed. The switch arms 1 ... 1<c> are falcrumed on a rod 2 mounted in brackets 4 on an insulating base 5, and their outward movement is limited by a rod 6. Each arm carries a contact brush 8 and an arcing-contact 9, and is provided at its lower end with an extension 13 carrying a lug 12. Operating-levers 14 are fulcrumed on a rod 15 mounted in the brackets 4 and are connected to the switch arms by links 17. The hub of each operating-lever is provided with a stop 18, which, when the corresponding switch is open, lies in the path of the lug 12 of the succeeding switch and prevents closure thereof. The switches are normally maintained in the open position by coiled springs 19. A contact-bar 22 and contacts 23 are mounted on the base 5 ; the contacts comprise a copper strip 24 and a carbon contact-block 26. The last operating-lever 14<c> has a pin 28 which is adapted to be held by the hook portion 29 of the armature 30 of a retaining-magnet 31. The first lever is always free to be actuated, but the second cannot be actuated until the first lever has been depressed to carry the stop 18 out of the path of the lug 12 provided on the second switch. As soon as the second lever is depressed to close the second switch, the lug 12 on the latter holds the first switch closed. The switches can thus be closed by a hand-over-hand movement. The connexions through the shunt field winding 36 and armature 38 of a motor are shown in Fig. 6. Should any part of the starting- resistance 42 be left in circuit, or should the current in the retaining-magnet fail, all the switches open as soon as released by the operator, thereby opening the motor circuit and re inserting all the starting- resistance.
