Abstract
6529. Ruthenburg, M. March 18. Treating ores to facilitate concentration. - Manganese and chromium ores containing iron are treated for the production of enriched ferro-manganese ore and ferro-chrome ore containing little or no carbon, by passing through them reducing-gas which has been pre-heated to 1000‹-1200‹ C. The ore is preferably in the form of small nuggets. The gases permeate the nuggets and effect the reduction of the iron in the low-grade ore nuggets, i.e. those in which iron predominates. The iron in the highgrade ore, i.e. that in which the chromium and manganese predominate, is almost unaffected at the temperature employed. The nuggets are then passed through rolls to break away any adhering silica &c., and are then treated in a magnetic separator, the low-grade and magnetic ore being thereby separated from the high-grade non-magnetic or weakly magnetic ore.
