Abstract
22,380. Hoy, H. A. Oct. 22. Surfacing and polishing.-A grinding-machine for grinding conical or parallel holes or pins for locomotives &c. is constructed with a revoluble shell b having an internal slidable carriage g, a barrel g<1>, and a pivoted sleeve m angularly adjustable within the barrel, and carrying an inner sleeve n which may be moved to and fro axially and torms a bearing for a spindle f carrying a grinding-tool f<1>. The shell b is carried in bearings in the frame a and is rotated by a worm c<2> engaging a worm-wheel c<1>, secured around the shell. The carriage g is slidably mounted in guides b<1> in the shell and may be traversed across the interior of the shell by the rotation of screw spindles j engaging nuts k on the carriage ; the spindles j carry worms i<4> gearing with worm-wheels i<3> on a spindle i<2> which also carries a worm i<1> gearing with a worm-wheel i mounted on a spindle carrying a pinion h ; the pinion h gears with an internallytoothed wheel b<3>, carried by a loose ring b<2> mounted on the shell b, so that when the ring b<2> is moved relatively to the shell b, the carriage g slides in its guides across the shell. The sleeve m is pivoted at m<2> within the shell g and by means of clamping- quadrant m<1> may be set at any desired angle with the vertical ; the sleeve m forms a bearing for the sleeve n, which may be moved axially by means of a telescopic counterbalanced arm o which is vibrated by a link p connected to a disk q driven by elliptical gear-wheels q<1>, q<2>. Within the sleeve n is the spindle f carrying the emery or other wheel f<1>. In lapping a conical hole as shown, the sleeve m is adjusted within the barrel to the proper angle of the hole and the carriage g is operated until the shell b will carry the grinding-spindle around its centre in contact with the work, the spindle f being meanwhile reciprocated by the arm o. The machine may be arranged with the axis of the barrel horizontal instead of vertical.
