Abstract

12,398. Dierman, W. June 9. Lighting, systems of.-Each of a number of metallic-filament lamps arranged in series is provided with a shunt circuit which includes a body or bodies having a negative resistance-temperature coefficient and arranged to indicate failure of the lamp, or to act as a substitutional resistance. In the former case, the dimensions of the body are such that it becomes incandescent when the pressure on it is increased owing to the failure of the corresponding lamp. In the latter case, the shunt circuit is either normally opened by a series electro-magnet, or arranged as shown. Here the shunt circuit contains a substitutional resistance body m, and also a similar body M of higher resistance, so that the normal shunt current is small. Increase in the shunt current on failure of the lamp causes an electro-magnet N to short-circuit the body M and part of its own winding. The resistance bodies may be of carbon, silicon, silicon carbide, or, according to the Provisional Specification, of antimony.
