Abstract

17,199. Lanston Monotype Corporation, [Bancroft, J. S., and Indahl, M. C.]. Aug. 15. Type composing and casting machines -Relates to record-strip or controller composing-machines of the kind described in Specifications No. 18,638, A.D. 1899, and No. 15,545, A.D. 1906. The justification indicator-drum 8, Fig. 3, is rotated by a rack formed on the front of the piston-rod 9 of the motor which drives the drum. The rotation of the drum is arrested by a projection on the rod 9 which meets a projection on the slide carried by the units motor-rack 6. The punches 1 are carried by bars 15, which are actuated by levers 17. The bars 15 are cut away to receive a universal bar 19, which retracts the punches. The bars 15 are connected by levers 20 with a detachable coupling- unit, similar to that described in Specification No. 18,230, A.D. 1906, which is connected with stopbars 13. The levers 17 are actuated by pistons 29 working in cylinders formed in a detachable block 24 secured to a plate 25, through which pass pipes 31 which admit pressure to the cylinders. The paper-tower frame is detachably mounted on the block 24 and is provided with a removable back 33. The universal bar 19 is carried by a shaft 34 having an arm 35 connected to the piston of a cylinder 38. Two or more punch-bar pistons must therefore be operated in order to raise the universal bar. Units and space counting mechanism. The units-rack and the units-wheel retaining-pawl are so connected together that one cannot be disengaged from the units-wheel until the other is in engagement therewith. The units-rack 11 slides in a carrier 42, Fig. 11, and, when released from the units-wheel, is retracted by a spring into contact with a spring cushioning-stop. The universal bar 19 is connected with the units-rack carrier 42 and with the retaining-pawl 12 through levers 52, 53. A lug 54 on the carrier 42 is pivoted to the lever 53, and is arranged to meet an adjustable stop when the rack engages the unitswheel. One end of the lever 53 is connected by a link 58 to the retaining-pawl 12 in rear of its pivot 60. A link 61 pivoted to the pawl 12 carries a pin or roller 62, which engages a slot 63 in an arm 64 supported on the pivot 60. A spring 65 holds the pawl in engagement with the units-wheel. When a punch is operated, the lever 53 lifts the units-rack into engagement with the units-wheel. A toe 67 on the arm 64 can then pass beneath a projection 57 on the rack-carrier 42 so that further movement of the lever 53 lifts the pawl 12 out of engagement with the unitswheel. The toe 67 prevents the withdrawal of the rack from the units-wheel until the pawl 12 reengages therewith. An adjustable wedge limits the movement of the retaining-pawl into engagement with the teeth of the units-wheel.. The unit of measurement is one-eighteenth of a pica em and is represented by one tooth of the unitswheel which is divided by radial lines into intervals of nine teeth. A vernier is provided to facilitate the adjustment of the wheel. To permit of the return of the units-wheel to zero at the end of a line, the pawl 12 is raised by a lever 74 actuated by the piston of a tripping-motor 79. Racing of the units-wheel is prevented by a detent which engages the arms of the wheel The feeding and holding pawls of the spacecounting device are simultaneously tripped by the motor 79. Alarm mechanism. The operator is warned when a line is nearly completed by a bell, the striker of which is actuated by a spring when released by a pin on the line-scale. The striker is. returned by a motor actuated by the resetting-. mechanism. Paper - feed mechanism. Reversed ratchetwheels 107, Fig. 24, on the pin-wheel shaft 108 are engaged by a feeding-pawl 110, a holding-pawl 109, and a locking-pawl 111. The feeding-pawl is carried by a lever 112 having a pin 113, which moves the locking-pawl 111 into engagement at the end of the feeding-stroke of the lever. On the shaft 116 of the take-up spool is a ratchetwheel 118, which is connected to the shaft by a spring and is engaged by a holding-pawl 121 and a feeding-pawl 122 carried by an arm 123, to which is connected a spring 124. The arm 123 is connected by a slotted link 126 with a plate 127 mounted on the shaft 108 and connected with the lever 112. During the feeding- stroke of the lever 112, the link 126 permits the ratchet-wheel 118 to be rotated by the pawl 122 under the influence of the spring 124. In order to release both the pin-wheels and the take-up spool, the arm 123 is drawn back until the pawl 122 engages a notch in a shield 132. The holding- pawl 121 is simultaneously withdrawn by a pin on the link 126 and the pawls 109, 110 are withdrawn by arms on the plate 127. The feeding-lever 112 is actuated by a rod 143, reciprocated by a pair of pistons, to which pressure is alternately admitted by a valve actuated by the universal bar 19. Keyboard mechanism. The pipes 31 leading to the punch-cylinders terminate in a bar 370, Fig. 3, to which is detachably secured a valve chest in the form of a bar 160 having a recess 161 and a detachable cover which is recessed to form a pressure-chamber 163. Valves mounted in the bar 160 are controlled by bars 173, beneath which is a series of transmitting-members in the form of shafts 174 provided with arms which support pairs of rods 175. The bars 173 may be in two groups separated by an interval, each shaft 174 being provided with two pairs of rods 175. Above the rods 175 is a series of permutation bars 177, which are actuated by keys 180. The bars 177 and the keys may be in two groups to correspond with the bars 173, the key groups being mounted in separate detachable frames. The bars 173 corresponding to the resetting-devices, and the justification indicator motor are operated directly from the permutation bars 177 by means of projections 182. Change from justifying to non-justifying spaces. The engaging-shoulders 176 of two of the bars 173 are carried by members pivoted to the respective bars, so that they can be moved into and out of the path of the rods 175..One of these bars corresponds to the designating factor of the justifying-space signal and is normally in operative position. After a certain number of spaces bave been inserted in the line, this bar is thrown out of operation, and the other comes into action, so that the remaining spaces are not affected by justification. Pressure system. Pressure is conveyed from the chamber 163 to the cylinder 38 of the universal bar 19, and thence to the valve of the paper-feed mechanism. The motor cylinder of the justification-space designating-punch is connected with that of the space-counting device. From the resetting-valve, pressure is conveyed to a directing- valve and thence to the resetting, tripping, and bellstriker returning motors. One of the justificationdesignation punch valves is connected with the directing-valve which can be adjusted by hand so that the resetting and tripping motors may be operated either by the resetting-key or by one of the justification keys.
