Abstract
26,826. Russell, W. H. Dec. 4. Motor road vehicles.-The driving- axle of an automobile comprises three members: (1) a long shaft 1 carrying a wheel on one end 3 and having a cup for a thrust ball 17 at the other : (2) a short shaft 7 carrying a wheel at one end, and having a corresponding cup for the thrust ball 17 ; and (3) a tubular member 12 screwed at one end to the sbaft 7 and surrounding a portion of the shaft 1. The axle is maintained in alinement by a roller bearing 18 of the kind described in Specification No. 25,488, A.D. 1905, [Abridgment Class Bearings &c.], fitted between the tubular member 12 and the shaft 1. The bearing is held in position by a collar 19 at one end screwed into the tube 12, and by nuts 21. Three other similar bearings are used between the live axle and the inner surface of a fixed casing 33. The driving bevel-wheels of the differential gear are secured to the tube 12 and the shaft 1 respectively. The differential gear may be arranged at any point of the axle.
