Abstract

425. Barnes, F. W. Jan. 7. Motor - cycles; frames, anti - vibration arrangements for. In a spring frame for road vehicles, more particularly motorcycles, tri-cars, and motorcars of the type wherein two approximately rectangular members are pivoted together and connected by springs, the two members are pivoted tog e t h e r at or near the middle of the length of each, so as to be capable of angular movement relatively to one another in a vertical direction somewhat like the limbs of a pair of scissors, displacement of the sections being opposed by springs which connect or are interposed between the sections preferably at their ends. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in connexion with a motor-bicycle, a frame 1, secured at 2 to the steering-head, is pivoted at 14 to a frame 12 which carries the rear axle b, springs 26, 28, 21, 27 being provided to oppose relative motion between the frames. The springs are carried by rods 22, 17 passing through lugs 23, 18 and are adjusted by nuts 24, 19. The seat is carried by a post 4 rising from the cross-stay 3 of the frame 1, the rear members 8 being also secured to this frame. The motor E is supported by brackets e upon the frame 12. As applied to a motor-car, the axles of the front and rear wheels may carry laminated leaf springs which are connected at their ends by pivoted links to the ends or thereabouts of the frames, each frame extending from one end of the front springs to the corresponding end of the rear springs ; or the axles may be carried directly by the front end of one frame and the rear end of the other frame, or vice versa. For a tri-car, the rear leaf springs of the arrangement mentioned above may be replaced by spiral springs, such as 26, 28. As described in the Provisional Specification, (1) in the case of vehicles having more than two wheels, the wheels of a pair may be mounted either between or outside the respective side bars of the frame to which the corresponding axle is attached, and (2) in the case of a tri-car the steering-post may be vertical and the fork horizontal so as to accommodate the petrol tank in front of the post.
