Abstract
26,081. Brady, F. W. April 14, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-In a four-strokecycle engine, a cam-operated valve between the valve-chest and combustion chamber forms the admission valve and exhaust valve of the latter. A liquid-fuel valve surrounding the stem of the main valve is worked by the same cam through tappet mechanism, and delivers fuel on to the stem of the main valve, being specially arranged to prevent leakage after closing. Fig. 4 shows the main valve stem o with the surrounding oil valve 18 in the closed position, this valve being also shown separately in Fig. 6. A projection on the cam d, Fig. 1, for operating the main valve causes a pin 31 to rotate a spindle 25, by which means the valve 18 is raised, being subsequently returned by a spring. The main valve remains open during the exhaust and suction strokes, the exhaust and airinlet valves in the valve-chest being automatic. During the suction stroke, the valve 18 is opened as above described, whereupon oil from a passage 20 passes through ports 16 to grooves 24 in the valve stem, and so runs down on the surface of the valve; when the valve 18 is closed, the whole of the oil beneath the valve 18 is discharged, and leakage thus prevented.
