Secondary batteries.-In a porous, separator of wood of the kind which has alternate plane surfaces . 18, Fig. 2, and grooves 13 on each face arranged in staggered relation as shown so that the wide plane surfaces and narrower grooves form solid portions 17, the wooden sheet 11 is made imperforate, and the portions 17 are made as wide as the full thickness of the plate 11. The separator is used in combination with two sheets of perforated, non- conducting material 12, e.g. of india - rubber Notches 15. Fig. 1, engage ribs 16 on the bottom of the cell, and allow the separators to extend lower than the battery plates, which rest on the ribs 16. The separator is described in connexion with plates 5, 6 having lighter grids than usual, the intermediate bars 7 being of less thickness than the frame. Cross-bars 9, 10 of the full thickness of the frame serve to resist buckling and as current conductors, while inwardly-extending ribs on the frames 5, 6, Fig. 2, retain the active material in place. The outer negative pole plates may be forty per cent, and the intermediate ones twenty per cent less in thickness than the positives.
