Abstract

25,122. Hybinette, N. V. Dec. 4. Alloys, refining.-The constituents of a nickelcopper alloy B are separated electrolytically by making the alloy the anode in a vat containing a greased copper cathode C mounted in a wooden frame E, and a filtering-diaphragm D consisting of two layers of canvas stretched on a framework K. A dilute solution of nickel sulphate, mixed with lactic, phosphoric, boric, or other weak acid, is supplied to the cathode compartment and continually passes to the anode compartment, the liquid levels being adjusted so as to cause this circulation. Nickel, in a non-adhering condition, is deposited upon the cathode, while nickel, copper, and iron are dissolved from the anode and pass away from the cell as sulphates. This solution, maintained at a boiling temperature, is caused to pass over bars &c. of nickel, or of nickel-copper alloy containing upwards of 70 per cent of nickel, the metal or alloy being practically free from carbon, silicon, and sulphur, whereby the copper is cemented out of the solution, being replaced by more nickel. The process is repeated to remove the last traces of copper, and the solution is then electrolyzed with insoluble anodes, for example of platinum, lead, or carbon, in order to convert all the iron into the ferric state. The addition of excess of nickel carbonate precipitates the iron as ferric carbonate, and the pure nickel solution is then returned to the cathode compartment and again circulated. The anode sludge contains insoluble metals, such as gold, platinum, palladium, &c., as well as quantities of copper and copper sulphide. Specifications Nos. 8661 and 15,988, A.D. 1885, are referred to.
