Abstract

9007. Lake, H. H., [Baker, D., and Hearne, W. W.]. April 28. Blast-furnace charges.-Iron ores or residues, such as pyrites residuum, pyrite cinders, purple ore, blue billy, are subjected to a heat which will first oxidize and eliminate sulphur, and then to a heat sufficient to melt'such impurities as alumina, silica, lime, magnesia, &c. and render the mass suitable for use in blast furnaces. Preferably, a long rotary kiln is used, and the material is charged in at the cold end so that desulphurization is completed before the material reaches the zone of highest temperature. The mass is sufficiently fused to become semi-plastic and sticky, and the rolling, or agitation, causes the formation of lumps or nodules. If a short kiln is used, the temperature is varied as required. In some cases, the process may be facilitated by moistening the ore at the outset.
