Abstract

3287. Maiden, J. Feb. 11. Bottling; sealing bottles, jars, and the like; stoppers.-Relates to stoppers for jars and other vessels intended to contain food preparations, from which vessels air is removed by an exhausting-apparatus, in order to preserve the food preparations. Fig. 1 represents a vessel. such as is used for potted meat. The outer edge a of the. stopper b rests upon an india-rubber washer e placed upon a shoulder c, formed at the mouth or neck of the vessel. A recess f is formed in the stopper, at the bottom of which is a hole g, passing. through the stopper. A valve i adapted to open upwards rests upon an india-rubber ring h in the recess f. Air is drawn out of the vessel through the valve i, a convenient form of exhausting-apparatus being shown in Fig. 2. When the exhaustion is complete, the recess f is filled with wax, paraffin, or fat, &c., and a label l is pasted over it to pre-, vent the valve from being shifted off its seat accidentally. Bottles or jars having conical or flared mouths are closed by conical stoppers, provided with circumferential grooves, into which elastic packing-rings are sprung. A central hole is formed through each stopper, the holes being loosely closed by wooden plugs during the exhausting of the vessels. When the exhaustion is complete, the plugs are driven tightly into their respective vessels by a plunger carried by the air-exhausting apparatus. Covers 3 of tin canisters d are held up during the exhausting of the canisters by a pneumatic sucker 4, Fig. 2, attached to the plunger x mentioned above. The cover is pushed into place by the plunger and held by atmospheric pressure, when air is again admitted to the chamber j.
