Abstract

4375. Dehn, C. W. Feb. 24. Riveting; punching; hydraulic pressure, apparatus for actuating machines by -Figs. 1, 3, and 4 show a fluidpressure riveting-machine, in which the C-shaped head a has a fixed anvil b to receive the head of the rivet, and a movable tool e operated by a piston in the cylinder c. The tool is withdrawn to allow the work to be put in place by admitting air below the piston through the pipe 23. The cylinder c, above the piston, is filled with water, supplied by the means shown in Fig. 4. After the work is in place, the tool is moved up by admitting air under pressure to the space m, through the pipe o, controlled by the cock 11. By this means, the water contained in the space m is forced through the pipes p, n into the cylinder c, and when the work to be performed is light completes it. When the work is heavy, the piston valve x is moved to the right by means of the lever 12. Air is thus admitted from the pipe 10, through the ports 13, 14 behind the pistons j, k, which are coupled by a tubular piston-rod v. Air is admitted to the port 14 through the hollow valve-spindle, and the perforation 15. The tubular piston-rod moves on a tubular rod s, which has a limited amount of endways movement. When air is admitted behind the pistons, they move to the right, and carry with them the rod s. Their further movement forces the water contained in the rods v, s through the pipe n into the working-cylinder to complete the riveting operation. In a modification, the cylinders shown in Fig. 4 are made in one with the head a. The machine may also be used for punching boiler shells, and for similar operations.
