Abstract
198,633. Wild, R., and Wild, A. H. March 1, 1922. Alloys.-Iron-chromium alloys of the unstainable type are made by fusing in a molten iron or steel bath a ferro-chrome containing silicon, and submitting the product to an oxidizing blow. The bath may be one containing oxygen or oxides, for example recently-blown Bessemer metal, and the ferro-chrome may be prepared by reducing a chromium compound in the presence of iron by means of a low-carbon silicon-containing reducing- agent. The preparation of the ferro-chrome and its mixture with the bath may be effected simultaneously by performing the reduction of a chromium compound such as chromite within the bath itself. The reducing-agent used is preferably ferro silicon. Any necessary addition of carbon may be introduced at any suitable stage, and a deoxidizer such as a small proportion of manganese may be added prior to tapping or to blowing.
