Tube expanders and the like.-Relates to apparatus for stretching or forming circular blanks or rings A, Fig. 1, into oval, oblong, or diamond-shaped ferrules, washers, and the like as shown in Fig. 2. The holder C of the slide of an ordinary press or stamp, preferably acting in an inclined direction as shown in Fig. 10*, has a wedge B having on each side a corresponding wedge D<1> with a semicircular or other suitably-shaped end d'. The wedges D<1> are connected to the holder by pins and slots, and are normally pressed down by springs E, so that the shouldered ends fit into the ring when the slide descends as shown in Fig. 4. The rings are fed down a groove f<1> into a divided die G, the lowest one resting against a stop f<3>. The continued descent of the slide causes the wedge B to spread the wedges D<1>, the movement of the latter being arrested by their shoulders engaging the ring, thus producing an elongated ferrule &c. On the up-stroke the ferrule is stripped by a plate K, and falls down a shoot. The wedge B may be omitted from the holder, and placed to be moved vertically upwards through the die bed F<1>, or the shaped ends d<1> may be formed on the sliding parts of the die G, the holder merely carrying a wedge.
