Abstract

Track apparatus for stopping trains.-Steam is wholly or in part cut off from the driving cylinders and, if desired, is supplied to the steam brakes of a locomotive by a four-way piston valve D interposed between the boiler and the driver's throttle-valve andthe air brakes are simultaneously applied by a valve A as a lever T with a roller T<4> runs over a raised ramp R. The lever T moves the cam slotted member S and rocks the levers S<4>, D<4>, A', which become locked by engagement of the pin S' in the end S<6> of the slot S until released by manual operation of the lever D<4>. The track ramp consists of a rail R supported on a series of pistons R' mounted in the track and supplied with compressed fluid from a reservoir under control of the signalman. Bypass valves or mechanically-operated stops may be used to stop the rail R at a partly raised position in which it serves to move the valve D to reduce the steam supply but not to cut it off entirely.
