Description
(54) ANCHOR BOLT
(71) We, SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUS
TRIES LIMITED, a Japanese Company of No. 15, Kitahama 5 scheme, Higashi-ku, Osaka-shi, Osaka, Japan, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to improvements in anchor bolt assemblies when used in rigidly fixing a member such as a sheet, plate and the like to a surface of a concrete body, e.g. to form a flexible envelope or wall type movable dam or the like.
Among the dams recently developed for use in irrigation are those (flexible envelope or wall type movable dam) which, as shown in Figure I, include a rubber coated fabric envelope 1 extending transversely across a river and attached to the bed of the river. The envelope 1 is filled with a fluid 2 such as air or water to inflate the same, and thus to maintain the envelope in an upright position, as disclosed in Japanese Patent
Publication Nos. Sho 40-1 1702 and Sho 44-2371.
In these cases, the edge of the envelope is in the form of a flat sheet, and it is necessary to prevent the anchor bolts 4, adapted to attach the aforementioned edge of the envelope to the river bed, for example, a concrete body 3, from becoming loose from the river bed so as to obviate an inadvertent rupture of the dam.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an improved anchor bolt assembly to ensure tight fixing in use, between a concrete body, for example a river bed, and a member, for example a flexible envelope dam.
According to the present invention, there is provided an anchor bolt assembly when used in rigidly fixing a member to a surface of a concrete body comprising a bolt adapted to extend through said member to be attached, said bolt being composed of an upper portion of stainless steel and a separate lower portion, a clamping nut threadingly engaged with said upper portion of said bolt, a supporting sleeve disposed in said concrete body, an upper planar end surface of said supporting sleeve being flush with the surface of said concrete body on which said member to be attached is to be mounted, said supporting sleeve or a further sleeve being engaged with both said upper and lower portions of said bolt to couple them linearly in abutting relationship, the lower portion of said bolt being further extended into said concrete body, whereby said member to be attached may be tightly sandwiched between said nut and said supporting sleeve by fastening said nut thereagainst.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a known flexible envelope or wall type movable dam, taken along the transverse direction of a water stream,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of an anchor bolt assembly according to the present invention, and
Figure 3 is a view, partly cut away, of an anchor bolt assembly according to another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figure 2, shown at 5 is a rubber coated carpet as a main body of an envelope 1 (Figure 1), at 6 a rubber coated seal sheet forming another part of the envelope 1 for preventing leakage of water, air and the like, along the surface of the concrete body, at 3 a concrete river bed, and at 4 an anchor bolt (See Figure 1) which rigidly fixes the carpet 5 and a seal sheet 6 that constitute the envelope, to the concrete river bed 3 in the following manner.
(See Japanese Patent Publication No. Sho 44-2371).
The anchor bolt 4 is fixed or embedded in a position on a river bed concrete body at which the envelope is to be fixed. Elongated packing material 10 made of such as rubber is placed along the fixing part in the surface of concrete body. Superposed on the packing material 10 in turn are the seal sheet 6, a cover sheet 11 coated with a rubber, a base plate 12 and then a clamping bar 14. In this respect, as shown, the edge of the carpet of the envelope, which is to be clamped together with the cover sheet 11, is trained around a rod 13 made of a metal or the like to be described later, and then the clamping bar 14 is pressed against the base plate by means of a fastening nut 15.
The clamping bar 14 includes a central member having at least one hole 16 therein and an arm member 17 extending from the central member, with a rounded end portion 18 having a smooth surface being formed on the arm member 17. Preferably, another arm member
19 extends from the arm member 17 in the
direction opposite to that of the arm member
17, thereby bearing on the base plate 12,
together with a leg 20 of the central member.
Then, the rod 13, around which the carpet 5
of the envelope and the cover sheet 11 are trained, is forced under the arm member 17
of the clamping bar 14, and thereafter, the hole 16 provided in the clamping bar 14
receives the anchor bolt 4, and then the nut
15 is fastened. Shown at 9 is a bar, disposed between the plate 12 and the cover sheet 11,
and at a location underneath and to the right of the rod 13. The edge of the carpet 5 of the envelope as well as the edge of the cover sheet
11 extends along the top surface of the clamping bar 14 so as to cover same, and are then secured to the top surface of the clamping bar
14, for instance, by means of drive screws 21,
as shown.In this manner, the seal sheet 6 and cover sheet 11 of the envelope are firstly linearly sealed with the aid of the packing material 10, and then secondly two dimensionally sealed, with the aid of the base plate 12.
This establishes a complete sealing between an attaching metal piece or a clamp and the river bed concrete body 3.
Since the edge of the carpet 5 of the envelope and the cover sheet 11 laid in superposed relating thereon are held down by means of the clamping bar 14, a complete seal is established between the carpet 5 of the envelope and the attaching metal piece or clamp.
Yet furthermore, the carpet 5 of the envelope and the cover seat 11 laid in superposed relation surrounds the clamping bar 14, so that even if the carpet 5 of the envelope is moved, the carpet 5 is prevented from being damaged due to an attaching metal piece.
In this manner, the carpet 5 of the envelope and the seal sheet 6 may be secured to the concrete river bed 3. However, according to the present invention, special care or consideration is given to the anchor belt 4.
As shown in Figure 2, the anchor bolt is threadingly engaged with a sleeve 25 disposed in the river bed concrete 3, and is welded to the sleeve 25 as at 8. An upper planar end surface of the sleeve 25 is flush with the top surface of the river bed concrete 3. In addition, an upper stainless steel portion or bar 22 of the anchor bolt 4 and a lower steel portion or bar of the anchor bolt 4 are threadingly engaged with the supporting sleeve 25 in abutting relation therein.
A concrete anchored nut 24 is secured to the lower end of the steel portion 23 of the bolt 4.
When the fastening nut 15 is tightened, as shown in Figure 2, the seal sheet 6, cover sheet 11 and base plate 12 are sandwiched through the medium of the clamping bar 14, under the cooperation of the tightening nut 15 and the supporting sleeve 25. Furthermore, the carpet 5, and cover sheet 11 are fixedly secured between the arm member 17 of the clamping bar 14 and the base plate 12, through the medium of the bar 9.
The cooperation of the supporting sleeve 25 with the nut 15 enables a strong fixing of the envelope 1 to the river bed concrete body 3. The clamping force to clamp the base plate
12 and the clamping bar 14 by the nut 15 is applied to the bolt 22 only, rather than to the anchor or lower portion of the bolt which has been embedded in the river bed concrete body 3. All the force acting on the anchor is only a tension acting on the carpet 5.
The nut 24 anchored in concrete and threaded on the lower end of the anchor belt 4 resists the withdrawal of the bolt 4 from the river bed concrete body under the tension, and remains in position unless the river bed concrete body is broken.
The selection of the upper portion 22 of the anchor bolt 4, which is made of stainless steel, and the lower portion 23 of the anchor bolt 4, which is made of steel, is intended to avoid an increase in manufacturing cost. In this case, the lower portion 23 of the bolt 4 is seldom corroded, because the portion 23 is embedded in the concrete body 3.
In the above embodiment, the upper stainless steel portion and the lower steel portion of the bolt are coupled together by means of the supporting sleeve. However, as shown in Figure 3, a coupling sleeve 26 may be provided separately of the supporting sleeve 25, so that the upper stainless steel portion of the bolt and the lower steel portion thereof may be integrally coupled.
Furthermore, though a nut anchored in concrete is secured to the end of the anchor bolt, a member having spider like branches may instead be used, such as a member having projecting portions extending at least in two directions perpendicular to the axis of the bolt, for instance, a. plurality of plate members extending in various directions perpendicular to the axis of the bolt, or a member having branches or ribs extending at least two different directions, or otherwise a member having projecting rods extending in various directions perpendicular to the axis of the bolt.
Yet furthermore, though in the above embodiment the anchor bolt consists of an upper stainless steel portion and a lower portion, a bolt made of stainless steel alone may be used, with some sacrifice of economy.
According to the present invention, members to be attached, such as shown at 12 and 14, may be sandwiched between the fastening bolt and the supporting sleeve which is integral with the bolt, and tightened together in position by means of the fastening nut, so that the fastening is applied on the bolt 22 alone, rather than on such a portion of the bolt which is anchored in a concrete body. A force acting on the anchor bolt is only a tension applied to the carpet 5, so that the diameter of such a portion of an anchor bolt as to be embedded in concrete, and the length thereof may be minimised.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. An anchor bolt assembly when used in rigidly fixing a member to a surface of a concrete body, comprising a bolt adapted to extend through said member to be attached, said bolt being composed of an upper portion of stainless steel and a separate lower portion, a clamping nut threadingly engaged with said upper portion of said bolt, a supporting sleeve disposed in said concrete body, an upper planar end surface of said supporting sleeve being flush with the surface of said concrete body on which said member to be attached is to be mounted, said supporting sleeve or a further sleeve being engaged with both said upper and lower portions of said bolt to couple them linearly in abutting relationship, the lower portion of said bolt being further extended into said concrete body, whereby said member to be attached may be tightly sandwiched between said nut and said supporting sleeve by fastening said nut thereagainst.
2. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower portion of the bolt is made of steel, said upper and lower portions of said bolt being linearly coupled in abutting relationship by said supporting sleeve.
3. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower portion of the bolt is made of steel, said upper and lower portions of said bolt being linearly coupled in abutting relationship by said further sleeve, positioned separate from and below said supporting sleeve.
4. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 further comprising a member having projecting pieces extending in at least two directions perpendicular to an axis of said bolt, said member being secured to a lower end of said bolt.
5. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein said member having projecting pieces extending in at least two directions perpendicular to the axis of said bolt is of a plate form.
6. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein said member having projecting pieces extending in at least two directions perpendicular to the axis of said bolt is of a rod form.
7. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein a nut is secured to a lower end of said bolt.
8. An anchor bolt assembly when used in rigidly fixing a member to a surface of a concrete body, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to, and as shown in
Figure 2 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.

Claims (8)
1. An anchor bolt assembly when used in rigidly fixing a member to a surface of a concrete body, comprising a bolt adapted to extend through said member to be attached, said bolt being composed of an upper portion of stainless steel and a separate lower portion, a clamping nut threadingly engaged with said upper portion of said bolt, a supporting sleeve disposed in said concrete body, an upper planar end surface of said supporting sleeve being flush with the surface of said concrete body on which said member to be attached is to be mounted, said supporting sleeve or a further sleeve being engaged with both said upper and lower portions of said bolt to couple them linearly in abutting relationship, the lower portion of said bolt being further extended into said concrete body, whereby said member to be attached may be tightly sandwiched between said nut and said supporting sleeve by fastening said nut thereagainst.
2. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower portion of the bolt is made of steel, said upper and lower portions of said bolt being linearly coupled in abutting relationship by said supporting sleeve.
3. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower portion of the bolt is made of steel, said upper and lower portions of said bolt being linearly coupled in abutting relationship by said further sleeve, positioned separate from and below said supporting sleeve.
4. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 further comprising a member having projecting pieces extending in at least two directions perpendicular to an axis of said bolt, said member being secured to a lower end of said bolt.
5. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein said member having projecting pieces extending in at least two directions perpendicular to the axis of said bolt is of a plate form.
6. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein said member having projecting pieces extending in at least two directions perpendicular to the axis of said bolt is of a rod form.
7. An anchor bolt assembly as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein a nut is secured to a lower end of said bolt.
8. An anchor bolt assembly when used in rigidly fixing a member to a surface of a concrete body, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to, and as shown in
Figure 2 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
