167,327. Ledwinka, J. May 20, 1920. Welding; welding joints; soldering; soldered joints.-Galvanized sheets, plates, strips, &c., such as terneplate, tinplate, or other steel plates &c. provided with a coating of softer metal such as lead, tin, zinc, bismuth, &c. are spot, butt, or lap welded electrically by first exposing the steel surfaces through the galvanizing or like material and then passing a current through the parts in the region of the exposed portions. The steel surfaces may be exposed by shearing off the edges of the parts. The zinc is volatilized by the current and serves as a flux. In spot welding, the zinc is volatilized at the welds but elsewhere spreads over and fills the welds and spaces between adjacent welds to produce a leak proof seam. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the edges 8, 9 are sheared and then overlapped and welded by electrodes 10, 11. In butt-welding, the sheared butted edges are lapped prior to welding by a strip sheared at its edges. A continuous lap weld may be effected by roll electrodes.
