Abstract

166,707. Law, J. A., (Smith, A. P.). April 21, 1920. Electrolytes. - An electrolyte for a storage battery consists of sulphuric acid mixed with silicic acid or other colloid together with a small quantity of one or more of the following substances, namely, methyl salicylate, turpentine, creolin, West's disinfectant fluid or similar body containing a phenolic body and a substance such as soap for producing an emulsion with water. The electrolyte is made by diluting commercial soda water glass with three times its volume of water then adding one or more of the substances referred to above and then five volumes of sulphuric acid S.G. 1.4. One fluid ounce of methyl salicylate and half an ounce of West's disinfectant fluid may be added to every gallon of water-glass solution. West's disinfectant fluid is a coal-tar product and consists of creosote oil and a resin soap.
