Abstract

166,579. Lewis, I. N. Jan. 16, 1919. Machine guns. - The parts of a gas-actuated automatic gun of the kind described in Specification 177,550 are arranged in units as follows to permit ready assemblage. (1) The barrel 1, screwed into the front portion of the body 3, is surrounded by a casing 4 the rear eccentric portion of which is detachably connected to the body by a split band 5 secured by a nut 8, the front concentric portion of the casing being spaced from the barrel by radial heat-radiating fins 13 to provide an annular chamber 15 for a gas piston 19 connected to the breech mechanism by a rod 23. A heat-insulating cover 150, preferably of wood, fits over the rear portion of the barrel casing and a bayonet may be. fitted over the tapered front portion 17. (2) The trigger guard 44, which houses the trigger mechanism described in Specification 166,580, is adapted to slide in from the rear of the gun on longitudinal guides at the lower end of the body and is retained by sliding the butt-tang 34 downwards over vertical flanges 116 on the rear of the body. The trigger-guard carries a pivoted catch 119 for retaining the butt-tang. (3) The butt-stock 102 is connected to screwed projections 104 on the tang by a central tube 103 the rear end of which is retained bv a nut housed in a recess formed in the shoulder plate. (4) The cartridge magazine M of the kind described in Specification 166,581 fits detachably over a pin 79 in the feed opening and is retained by a sliding spring-controlled catch 80 mounted on the trigger-guard so as to be operated by a finger piece 86 in juxtaposition to the trigger 50.
