Abstract

164,827. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). March 11, 1920. Arc-rupturing.-The arc formed when the contacts are separated is split in the plane of the arc by impinging on the edge of a flat insulating barrier 32, Fig. 8. The dotted circles represent cross-sections of the arc leaving a contact 31, before and after impinging on the barrier 32, which is formed with a sharp bevelled edge. Preferably, side plates 33, 34 are added so as to confine the arcs to constricted shoots with narrow exits at the remote ends. A number of barriers and partitions may be combined as indicated at 26, 27, 28, Fig. 1, for rupturing the arcs of a row of controller contacts. To form magnetic blow-outs according to the invention, iron plates are embedded in the side insulating plates, and the blow-out coil may be placed as shown at 41, Fig. 10.
