Abstract

1536847 Internally oxidized alloys SQUARE D CO 12 July 1976 [19 July 1975] 30338/75 Headings C7A and D An electrically conductive composite material sutitable for electrical contacts consists of a mixture of silver, not more than 16À07% zinc oxide with optionally up to 6À13% copper oxide. The method of producing the material involves mixing the zinc and silver powders, heating to form a silver-zinc alloy in powder form by diffusion, then heating the Ag-Zn powder in an oxidizing atmosphere at 180‹C to melting point to oxidize the Zn to ZnO, and compacting to the required shape prior to sintering and coining. Production of Ag-Zn-Cu composites involves the mixing of Zn powder with copper oxide powder to give a Zn-cupric oxide mix, mixing this powder with silver powder, heating the mixture in a reducing atmosphere of H, CO, cracked ammonia, burnt natural gas of propane or a CO-H 2 mixture at 200-700‹C to form a Ag-Zn-Cu alloy powder. The powdered alloy is then subjected to internal oxidation by heating in air or oxygen to oxidize the Zn and re-oxidize the Cu. The oxidized powder is then compacted (about 40 t.s.i.) and sintered preferably about 700‹C for 1-2 hours in air, oxygen or an inert gas prior to coining, to improve the density and to finally dimension the article, at about 60 t.s.i. The material so produced has comparable erosion resistance properties to the standard Ag-CdO composite materials but without their toxicity.
