Abstract

1533013 Leak testing SOC GENERALE D'ETUDES MECANIQUES ET ELECTRIQUES 18 Feb 1976 [21 Feb 1975] 06454/76 Heading G1S A sniffer device for use in leak testing in conjunction with a tracer gas such as freon or helium and a detector therefore comprises a body 1 having an open chamber 2 for connection to pumping means to lower the pressure in the chamber and to the detector, and gas operated lifting means 9, 10 for producing a lifting force on the body 1 to counteract the suction force produced by the reduced pressure in chamber 2. The means 9, 10 includes a conduit 9 connected to an annular orifice 10, gas flowing through the conduit and orifice to produce sufficient lifting force to maintain the device slightly spaced from a surface being tested. The gas from orifice 10 also acts as a barrier to prevent air from entering chamber 2. The body 1 carries a layer of resilient material 5. In Fig. 4, a tank 111 to be tested is connected to a pumping system including an ejector 300 and a pump 400 via line 200. Gases to produce a tracer gas mixture are introduced at 125, 126, mixed at 124, expanded at 134 and injected at 114 and/or 200. The sniffer device is connected to a detector 152 and a pump 149. To check a wall not forming part of a closed vessel, a chamber is formed on one side of the wall by plastics material to provide a chamber for injection of the tracer gas.
