Abstract

1526990 Automatic control R F SHAW 7 Dec 1976 51079/76 Heading G3N Apparatus for detecting perivascular infiltration of intravascular infused liquids when the liquid is of a similar temperature to the patients skin surface temperature comprises a rubber impregnated nylon pad 9 which is heated by current passing through wires from a heat controller 31, and a pair of sensors one 17 of which is located immediately above the infusion point and the other 19 remote therefrom, both sensors being located within the pad, the sensor above the infusion point dropping in temperature if the liquid infiltrates, this being detected by a comparator 36 which receives signals from both sensors. If the temperature difference reaches a level predetermined by a detector 43 then an alarm is activated or a liquid flow control 25 caused to terminate infusion. Instead of sensor 19 the signal from sensor 17 may be compared with a reference signal 37. The heating of the pad is controlled in response to heat-sensitive element 13. The pad 9 may alternatively be provided with means to cool the patients skin and the sensor 17 would then be subjected to a rise in temperature on liquid infiltration.
