1526497 Nitriles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 15 Aug 1977 [16 Aug 1976] 33970/76 Heading C2C Nitriles of the formula R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>CH-CHR<SP>1</SP>C # N, wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group or a hydrogen atom and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are optionally substituted hydrocarbyl groups or hydrogen atoms or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> together complete a carbocyclic ring, are obtained by reacting nitriles of the formula R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>C = CR<SP>1</SP>CN with alkanols and magnesium in the presence of ammonium salts.
