Abstract
1520620 Starch xanthate mixed magnesium salts R E WING and W M DOANE 13 June 1977 [14 June 1976] 24624/77 Heading C3U A process for preparing a mixed alkali metal (Na or K)-magnesium salt of a cross-linked starch xanthate comprises xanthating a crosslinked granule starch in an aqueous slurry containing excess sodium or potassium hydroxide, incorporating a water-soluble magnesium salt in the slurry before dewatering the xanthated starch to provide 0À2-1À6 parts/ weight of Mg per each part by weight of xanthate sulphur and then dewatering the xanthated starch by filtration or centrifugation to obtain the derived mixed product. The preferred magnesium salt used is the sulphate and the crosslinked granule starch used has a degree of swelling in water at 95‹ C. of 65-75%.
