Abstract
1518243 Cleaning continuously cast copper rod SOUTHWIRE CO 24 June 1976 [24 June 1975] 26387/76 Heading C7E [Also in Division B3] Continuously cast and rolled Cu rod is descaled at above 900‹F by passing it through an open ended conduit in zones 15-21 where it is contacted with a laminar flow of a cooler aqueous solution containing at least one of aliphatic monohydroxy alcohols, polyhydroxyalcohols, ketones, alkyl and alkanol amines, secondary amines and tertiary amines which is continuously recirculated and maintained at pH > 7. The rod may pass through several zones 15-17, 17-19, 19-21 and the aqueous solution may flow concurrent or countercurrent to the rod. The pH may be adjusted with alkali metal hydroxide or Na 2 CO 3 and the solution may contain a surfactant, chelating agent or antifoam and wax, although the rod may be waxed later prior to coiling.
