Abstract
1511620 Nuclear reactor INTERATOM INTERNATIONALE ATOMREAKTORBAU GmbH 20 Dec 1976 [22 Dec 1975] 53162/76 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor includes a "core-catcher" receptacle disposed beneath the core and comprising an upper layer 3 of a material such as uranium dioxide or thorium dioxide having a high melting point, good chemical stability and low thermal conductivity, and a lower layer 2 of a material such as graphite having a good thermal conductivity. The receptacle includes an outer metallic layer 1, a shield 4 against mechanical damage, and a heat exchanger 5 filled with a liquid rodium/potassium alloy. The graphite layer 2 may be made up of 2 elongate bodies of hexagonal cross-section. The reactor may be a liquid sodium cooled fast breeder reactor.
